Laura Jane Cohen is running for the Fairfax County school board. A resident of Fairfax county for two decades, Laura has served as a PTA president, a preschool teacher, a substitute teacher in Fairfax county public schools, a director of outreach for a national nonprofit on Parkinson’s disease, and a staffer for Georgia’s Lt. governor and secretary of state.
As a mother of two kids in the FCPS, and a granddaughter and daughter of public school teachers, she explained her motivation to run for school board as a “firm believer in public education and its vital role that it plays in how people turn out to be as human beings.” She says we need to protect the pay and benefits of not just teachers but also education support personnel, such as office staff and instructional assistants.
She talked about the important role of school boards in communicating their work to parents and the importance doing your homework as a board member given the size and scope of the school board’s budget and strategic oversight. She discussed the need to build new school buildings to reduce the number of temporary classroom trailers.
